Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 cup uncooked rice (white or brown)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 (15 oz) can low-sodium tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to boil and blanch individual cabbage leaves for about 2 minutes until softened. Set aside on paper towels.
  2. In a skillet, sauté diced onions over medium heat until translucent. In a bowl, mix cooked rice, ground beef, sautéed onions, salt, pepper, and any preferred herbs.
  3. Take one cabbage leaf and place about two tablespoons of filling near the stem end. Fold in sides and roll tightly.
  4. Mix tomato sauce with sugar, salt, and pepper in another bowl. Pour half into an oven-safe dish.
  5. Arrange rolls seam side down over the sauce and top with remaining sauce. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 60 minutes.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving with extra sauce.
