- 1 large head green cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
- 1 cup uncooked rice (white or brown)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 (15 oz) can low-sodium tomato sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to boil and blanch individual cabbage leaves for about 2 minutes until softened. Set aside on paper towels.
- In a skillet, sauté diced onions over medium heat until translucent. In a bowl, mix cooked rice, ground beef, sautéed onions, salt, pepper, and any preferred herbs.
- Take one cabbage leaf and place about two tablespoons of filling near the stem end. Fold in sides and roll tightly.
- Mix tomato sauce with sugar, salt, and pepper in another bowl. Pour half into an oven-safe dish.
- Arrange rolls seam side down over the sauce and top with remaining sauce. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 60 minutes.
- Let cool slightly before serving with extra sauce.
