Ingredients
  

Onion
  • 1 large sweet onion such as Vidalia
Batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Oil
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Cut the onion to create the blooming effect, making sure not to cut all the way through.
  2. Soak the onion in cold water for at least 30 minutes.
Battering and Frying
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
  2. Dip the soaked onion into the buttermilk, then coat it with the flour mixture.
  3. Heat the oil in a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Fry the onion for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Remove and drain on paper towels before serving.
